  16. New York Yankees to four World Series championships in the
  17. 1950s as a hot-hitting and fielding second baseman and in 1977
  18. as a tactically shrewd manager; of injuries suffered when his
  19. pickup truck, driven by a friend who was charged with drunken
  20. driving, skidded off an icy road; in Johnson City, N.Y.
  21. Notorious for his barroom brawls, Martin was fired as Yankee
  22. helmsman four times by team owner George Steinbrenner, and was
  23. forced to resign once after remarking about slugger Reggie
  24. Jackson and Steinbrenner, "One's a born liar, and the other's
  25. convicted"--a reference to the boss's guilty plea for illegal
  26. contributions to Richard Nixon's 1972 campaign.
